Brenda, I would love for you to add my book to your list as I feel it addresses many of the questions and concerns that some of your visitors have expressed. It’s called “Things I Never Learned in Sunday School: Facts about the Christian church that will surprise and astound you.”.
I’m an ex-Christian and the book is about the history behind many popular Christian beliefs. It contains nearly 200 references resulting from extensive study and research that I did after leaving the faith. (No surprise — things are not always as they seem.)
I would be happy to send you a copy (pdf format). My email is info -at- writing-etc.com. You can read more about the book at Amazon in the Kindle store. Paperback will be available soon.
I will send you an email Nan and you can send me the pdf.
Which of these books would you probably recommend?
Which ones I would recommend would depend on where someone is at and what their particular issues are.
I’d have to say that besides the obvious ones that offer fairly extensive coverage of the issues (‘godless’, ‘atheist universe’, ‘why I became an atheist’, and ‘farewell to god’), the favourites that jump out at me are ’50 reasons people give for believing in a god’ and ‘believing bullshit.’
I do remember ‘how jesus became christian’ blowing my mind at the time, but that was one of the first books I read that was outside my Christian bubble so it wouldn’t have taken much to blow my mind – lol.
The other ones I’d recommend for different specific issues. ‘God’s Problem’ had a big influence on me as well as ‘Misquoting Jesus.’
If I had to pick a couple for you for where you’re at I’d choose ’50 reasons people give for believing in a god,’ and ‘believing bullshit.’
It’s been awhile since I’ve read any of these but I hope that helps!
